Lopez's efforts earlier this year torpedoed the NY state legislature's efforts to repeal/modify the SOL for NY. It was the first time in years that Congressperson Markey of NY who originally sponsored the bill had enough votes to pass it. The NY bishops spent millions to defeat this legislature (tax exempt institution) using vague, incorrect, and inaccurate statements about pending bankruptcy, threatening to close parishes in districts where NY catholic representatives who voted in favor of SOL lived, etc.
To compound this issue, Lopez wanted to change the zoning laws in his river front district but was opposed by the local catholic parish priest and a catholic advocacy leader. DiMarzio moved the pastor to support Lopez who in turn defeated the SOL bill. Lopez last week tried to get the bishop and church to vote out the local city rep who opposed his zoning bill - she was re-elected, thank god. The zoning bill is about throwing a few hundred people out of their current tenement apartments so that Lopez and buddies can tear down and rebuild expensive townhouses. Pastor, local groups oppose this because it strikes at the poor, middle class folks who have lived in these apartments and neighborhoods for years.
BTW - Vito and girlfriend have also made the front pages over some seemly public behaviors in their relationship (which doesn't meet the pending marriage pastoral that the USCCB is considering - cohabitation is intrisically evil. But, none of this will bother DiMarzio who is so deep into ethical contradictions, movement of pedophile priests, finanical irregularies, etc.
Ain't it a great church to be in.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8383701632927065467.post-84900581584227127972009-11-05T11:44:07.982-07:002009-11-05T11:44:07.982-07:00coolmom, that's my take too. Malone is not following Christ's example, and his don't do as I do, do as I say morality is fairly questionable.khughes1963https://www.blogger.com/profile/16118365554189078448noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8383701632927065467.post-77421563913223936592009-11-03T16:48:16.932-07:002009-11-03T16:48:16.932-07:00Imagine if they'd come out and told us that op...Imagine if they'd come out and told us that opposing war is a binding moral duty! Because the Lord said: Love your enemies!

Why do they never address stuff like that? That should be preached?

But, no.... we get "duties" that go against Jesus - a man who said, "Let the one without sin cast the first stone." And mind you, in no way do I view homosexuality as sin. I'm just making a point.

I think the church hierarchy has well and truly shot itself in the foot. One. More.
