Personally I think a yes vote would lead the state of Maine closer to Sodom and Gomomorra.

Even if I take that story as literally about homosexual acts, I also have to take literally the idea that it's OK to offer the sexual favor of your virginal daughters to strangers. Why is that never mentioned, and what does that say about women? That a virgin woman is less than the typical male anus?colkochhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03432916690101599393noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8383701632927065467.post-73722576663756063302009-11-03T10:01:11.856-07:002009-11-03T10:01:11.856-07:00Just went to vote--past the sign that says, "...Just went to vote--past the sign that says, "Ready for Sodom and Gomorrah, If not then vote YES on 1!" If we are hateful we go against God. First and foremost in God's laws is to love God and to put no other gods before Him. It seems the god of hatred for one's fellow man and one's self-righteous bigotry are reigning supreme again as in the last century of bloody scourges and bent for destruction. As the world then kept quiet about the insults towards Jews, now the world begins to scapegoat gays with a vengeance and hatred not unlike that of the Jews.

One of the first powerful messages we receive in Genesis is of the story of two brothers and of killing one's brother. Who truly understands this story, but goes against it in devising laws that make it permissible to abuse or kill others? Who says they are a Christian, but fails to act as if they understand the lessons to be learned from God? Apparently many still take the wide road of ignorance but claim they are on the righteous path.

Until Christians become true Christians who are true followers of the merciful, forgiving and loving Jesus Christ and obey His Command to "love one another", the ignorance and bloodshed will continue throughout the world. They will beget, inherit, and reap what they sow, and what they are sowing with their hatred and ignorance of gays, their ignorance of Christ and the prophets, are the seeds of death, a culture of death of which they will be responsible before God.

This Ugandan "Anti-Homosexuality Act" with the support of "Christian leaders" is nothing short of the work of the devil. How sad and such an obvious lie that they have the ignorance, and audacity and arrogance to call themselves "Christian leaders."

The Bishop of Portland is promulgating hatred and ignorance towards gays. First of all, a Civil Union is not a matter for the Church to decide, but is a State matter and in the USA the government is By The People and For The People, not by the Church and for the Church. The Church does not say that Civil Unions are Marriages. The Church denies that Civil Unions are Marriages. He is no better than the Ugandan "Christian leaders" who break God's commands and remain ignorant of God's laws and not obeying His laws and commands to "love one another."

A pity any Catholic or Christian would listen to this Bishop and undermine the Constitution of the United States at the same time, being against the basic principle of equality and justice for all.

This is still not the United States of the Vatican. May we keep it the United States of America by continuing to preserve and enjoy the freedom from religious zealots of bigotry and inequality of persons.butterflyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09684946870144030594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8383701632927065467.post-76368650001543376222009-11-02T13:36:55.639-07:002009-11-02T13:36:55.639-07:00The sad thing Matt is if we can't find a way t...The sad thing Matt is if we can't find a way to do both, we won't accomplish either.

coolmom, great point. Who is the next group in Catholicism? Those who use birth control? It sure does look to me like this is the next targeted group. Certainly in Africa, and certainly in attempts to restrict abortion financing in health care because they are attempting to define certain oral contraceptives as abortifacients.

People seriously need to wake up to this whole concept of removing legal rights of minorities. Fortunately, many Maine Catholics have real problems with this.
What's going on in Uganda is a shame. The U.S. State Department should issue warnings to gay and lesbian travellers should this legislation pass.
We shouldn't forget the horrible treatment of gays in muslim countries. In Iran, gays--even gay teen-agers--are hanged from construction cranes at busy intersections; and in Iraq--which we are supporting financially to the tune of a billion dollars every few weeks--there has been a surge in murders of gay men. They are especially grusome. These guys are castrated and their anuses are glued shut. The message being: closed for business. America, which had been concerned about human rights in the past, has said little about this. Human rights seems to pale when are interests are stabilizing the Iraqi government. Too bad we can't see our way clear to do both.Mattnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8383701632927065467.post-72787479910494912902009-11-02T12:41:15.895-07:002009-11-02T12:41:15.895-07:00Anyone who thinks this does not affect them becaus...Anyone who thinks this does not affect them because they do not live in Maine or Uganda needs to think again. As such all citizens of the world should be outraged and horrified. It should come up at the United Nations. And if Justice were truly practice, all religions and religious leaders should vociferously condemn it. As they should now.

It is almost unthinkable that such practices could happen, let alone be proposed, by any civil authority. That religious leaders should play a role is heart-breaking in the extreme.TheraPhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17684120043427738135noreply@blogger.com
